Sapienza Global Bedside Evaluation of Swallowing after Stroke: The GLOBE-3S study
European Journal of Neurology Dec 06, 2018
Toscano M, et al. - Researchers evaluated the accuracy of the Sapienza Global Bedside Evaluation of Swallowing after Stroke (GLOBE-3S), which combines the Toronto Bedside Swallowing Screening Test (TOR-BSST©) with oxygen desaturation and measurement of laryngeal elevation during swallowing. For this investigation, they prospectively enrolled consecutive stroke patients within 72 h of symptom onset. All stroke patients underwent first a standard neurological examination, then the GLOBE-3S evaluation and lastly the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). In patients with acute stroke, GLOBE-3S is quick to perform at the bedside and can precisely identify aspiration. It could represent a highly sensitive instrument to avoid the misdiagnosis of silent aspirators by including laryngeal elevation measurement and oxygen desaturation monitoring.
