Safety, feasibility and economic impact of same-day discharge following atrial fibrillation ablation
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Apr 16, 2020
Reddy SA, et al. - In this retrospective, single-centre investigation, researchers assessed whether day case atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation at Royal Papworth Hospital (RPH) was feasible, safe as well as efficacious. For this purpose, they analyzed consecutive AF ablations at RPH between March 2017 and April 2018. Overall 452 AF ablations were done in 448 patients. Significantly shorter duration, more chance to start in the morning and less chance to need general anaesthetic were reported for day case procedures vs overnight stays. The overall complication rate was estimated to be 3.3%, with no significant disparity between groups. Findings revealed the efficacy of day case AF ablation as well as its link with a low event rate, even without strict standardisation of patient selection or procedural protocols, in a high-volume centre. More widespread implementation of outpatient AF ablation can result in a substantial decrease in health care cost.
