Safety and effectiveness of chemotherapy for metastatic esophageal cancer in a community hospital in Brazil
Journal of Global Oncology Sep 11, 2019
Victor CR, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed the safety as well as the efficacy of chemotherapy in patients with metastatic esophageal cancer in the community setting. Participants were patients managed at a public hospital between 2008 and 2016 for synchronous metastatic esophageal cancer. These were categorized based on a prescribed chemotherapy protocol: platinum and taxane (group A); platinum and irinotecan (group B); platinum and fluoropyrimidine (group C); and without platinum (group D). They found that overall survival (OS) offered by platinum plus paclitaxel or platinum plus irinotecan was similar in community patients, although more severe events were noted in patients receiving irinotecan. Less frequent use of a fluoropyrimidine plus platinum–based regimen was reported in the adenocarcinoma population but with a more favorable toxicity profile, and superior median OS and disease control.
