Role of post-acute care in readmissions for preexisting healthcare-associated infections
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 31, 2019
Hoffman GJ, et al. - Researchers utilized 2013-2014 national hospital discharge data to assess the risk of preexisting healthcare-associated infection (HAI) readmissions as per patient discharge disposition and comorbidity level. This study included 702,304 hospital discharges for Medicare beneficiaries 65 years or older. Discharge to a skilled nursing facility (SNF), home health care, and to home was reported in 353,073 (50%), 179,490 (26%), and 169,872 (24%) of 702,304 index admissions involving HAI treatment, respectively. Among preexisting HAIs, a total of 17,523 (2.5%) caused associated HAI readmissions, which were more common for Clostridioides difficile infections (4.0%) and urinary tract infections (2.4%) compared with surgical site infections. Findings revealed fewer avoidable readmissions for preexisting HAIs in relation to SNF discharges vs home discharges.
