Risk of subsequent ventricular arrhythmia is higher in primary prevention patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator than in secondary prevention patients
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Oct 29, 2019
Zhou Y, Zhao S, Chen K, et al. - Researchers compared primary prevention (PP) patients following the first appropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy and secondary prevention (SP) patients in terms of the incidence rate and risk of subsequent ventricular arrhythmia (VA) and all-cause mortality. For this purpose, they retrospectively examined clinical features and follow-up data acquired from 835 ICD patients, including 364 SP patients and 471 PP patients, with home monitoring feature. The participants were observed over a mean follow-up period of 44.72 ± 20.87 months, during which, appropriate ICD therapy was received by 210 (44.59%) PP patients. Findings revealed more proneness to VA recurrence and death in PP patients once they undergo appropriate ICD therapy, compared with SP patients.
