Risk of being subjected to crime, including violent crime, after onset of mental illness: A Danish National Registry study using police data
JAMA Psychiatry May 29, 2018
Dean K, et al. - The authors planned to establish the incidence of being subjected to all types of criminal offenses, and by violent crimes separately, after onset of mental illness across the full diagnostic spectrum compared with those in the population without mental illness. This national cohort study of more than 2 million individuals displayed increased incidence of experiencing any crime and violent crime was noted among those with mental illness. Both men and women exhibited the association across the diagnostic spectrum. The strongest associations were found for those with substance use disorders and personality disorders. Findings thereby suggest that mental illness across the diagnostic spectrum is associated with increased risk of police-reported experiences of being subjected to violent and nonviolent crime.
