Risk factors, imaging findings, and sex differences in spontaneous coronary artery dissection

American Journal of Cardiology Mar 15, 2019

Sharma S, et al. - The risk factors, angiographic appearance, and sex differences in spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) were explored using a current and comprehensive SCAD registry in this retrospective analysis. Researchers analyzed a prospectively populated database of SCAD patients (n=113, 87% were female and mean age was 47 ± 10 years). Coronary angiograms and computerized tomographic (CT) angiography of the extra-coronary vessels were analyzed. Some under-recognized features of SCAD were identified, which included its link with pregnancy complications and exposure to hormonal therapy. Also, on a background of extra-coronary arterial abnormalities, diffuse, multi-vessel process in tortuous coronaries was detected. The role of mental health and potential under-diagnoses in men were indicated by the sex differences.
