Risk factors for stroke in patients with sepsis and bloodstream infections
Stroke Apr 29, 2019
Shao IY, et al. - In this investigation involving 121,947 patients with sepsis, researchers identified predictors of stroke following sepsis and bloodstream infections. Using the 2007–2009 California State Inpatient Database from the Health Care Utilization Project, patients aged > 18 years and hospitalized with sepsis or bloodstream infection were identified. Patients who died in hospital during sepsis were excluded. Based on the regression coefficients, a score was generated from these risk factors: valvular heart diseases (1 point), congestive heart failure (1), renal failure (1), lymphoma (2), peripheral vascular diseases (2), pulmonary circulation disorders (2), and coagulopathy (3). Findings suggested that risk factors and a composite risk score for stroke can help identify a sepsis patient subpopulation that may be targeted to reduce the short-term risk of stroke following severe infections.
