Risk factors for rapidly progressive neurological deterioration in cervical spondylotic myelopathy
Spine Jun 06, 2019
Takasawa E, et al. - Via this retrospective single-center study of 71 consecutive cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients (52 men, 19 women), researchers appraised the surgical outcome in patients with rapidly progressive CSM (rp-CSM). In addition, they sought for the associated risk factors. They divided the patients into two groups: rp-CSM and chronic-CSM (c-CSM) groups. Risk factors for rp-CSM comprised a history of cardiovascular event (CVE) and MR T2-hyperintensity. rp-CSM patients display rapid neurological deterioration, but after surgery, a good neurological recovery occurs. This suggests rp-CSM as a reversible condition.
