Risk factors for peripheral nerve injury after 207,000 total hip arthroplasties using a New York state database (SPARCS)
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 03, 2019
Christ AB, et al. - Using a New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS), authors studied the risk factors for peripheral nerve injury (PNI) following total hip arthroplasty (THA). They recorded patient demographics, medical history, surgical details, hospital characteristics, and in-hospital complications. They identified 207,981 cases with 487 recognized as new PNI. An association of younger age, in-hospital complications, and thromboembolic events with postoperative PNI was noted. They also found a strong correlation of pre-existing spinal conditions with the development of PNI postoperatively (as was dislocation and diabetes with chronic complications).
