Risk factors for infection with soil-transmitted helminths during an integrated community level water, sanitation, and hygiene and deworming intervention in Timor-Leste

International Journal for Parasitology Feb 28, 2019

Nery SV, et al. - Researchers investigated how individual- and household-level water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) variables are associated with soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, using data collected during the 2 year follow-up study period of the WASH for WORMS randomized controlled trial in Timor-Leste. They analyzed 2333 participants and identified factors to be associated with N. americanus infection, these included age group, male sex, working as a farmer, and completing secondary school or higher. For Ascaris spp. infection, age group, living in a dwelling with more than six people, having a tube well or borehole as the household water source, and using a latrine shared between households 6 months previously were the risk factors. They identified the protective effects of handwashing before eating against infection with any STH. Few WASH-related factors were noted to be associated with STH infections in the context of regular deworming.
