Risk factors for infection after prostate biopsy in the United States

Shoag JE, Gaffney C, Pantuck M, et al. - Researchers utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare combined data from 2001 to 2015 and recorded 30-day infection rate and emergency department, hospital and, ICU admissions in order to characterize trends in the incidence and severity of post-biopsy infection, and insight to contemporary trends in prostate biopsy associated infections and correlated risk factors. The overall rate of post-biopsy infections increased from 2001 to 2007 but remained stable through 2015. It was found that the overall rate of post-biopsy infections had stabilized since 2007, admissions to the emergency room, hospital, and ICU proceed to rise. Moreover, improved surgeon volume was correlated with a reduced risk of infection.
