Risk factors for cardiovascular disease in 5-year survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer: A Danish population-based cohort study

Cancer Nov 25, 2019

de Fine Licht S, et al. - Considering a previous work reporting on the risk for diseases in the metabolic syndrome specifically among survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers, researchers undertook the current study investigating both hospital contacts and purchase of prescription drugs associated with metabolic syndrome among survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer and compare such events with those in a subset of the general population. From 1994 through 2009, diagnosis of 11,822 five-year survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer (ages 15-39 years at diagnosis) was made in Denmark; the population-based comparison cohort was comprised of 76,024 individuals. They linked the cohorts to Danish nationwide registries for information on hospital contacts and the purchase of prescription drugs related to metabolic syndrome, respectively. The analysis revealed higher risks for hospital contacts and prescriptions for diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension among survivors. Survivors of brain cancer (RR, 2.94 for diabetes) and Hodgkin lymphoma (RR, 2.40 for diabetes) exhibited the highest risks for hospitalizations. Based on these findings they recommend performing close follow up of survivors at high risk to improve prevention, early detection, and management of these diseases to ultimately reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
