Risk factors for bloodstream infections among an urban population with skin and soft tissue infections: A retrospective unmatched case-control study
Infectious Diseases and Therapy Dec 21, 2018
Rybak MJ, et al. - Researchers investigated clinical and sociodemographic risk factors for bloodstream infection (BSI) in patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs). Further, they examined the influence of sociodemographic factors on severity at presentation. In this retrospective unmatched (1:1) case-control study performed including 392 patients (196 cases, 196 controls), they identified male gender, acute renal failure, intravenous drug use, and prior hospitalization as independent predictors of BSI. Infection severity was noted to be significantly associated with African American race, leukocytosis, and prior hospitalization. Findings thus highlight the significance of social determinants of health in outcomes among underserved populations.
