Risk factors associated with early-onset colorectal cancer
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Oct 18, 2019
Gausman V, Dornblaser D, Anand S, et al. - Since the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing in people younger than 50 years, who do not usually undergo screening if they are of average risk, researchers used univariable and multivariable logistic regression models to identify risk factors for CRC in this population. From January 1, 2011, through April 3, 2017, data from all adult patients with a diagnosis of CRC from electronic health records were collected. Two hundred sixty-nine patients with early-onset CRC, 2,802 with late-onset CRC, and 1,122 controls were identified. Non-modifiable risk factors were identified, including sex, race, inflammatory bowel disease, and CRC family history, to be linked to early-onset CRC in a retrospective study of patients with early-onset CRC vs late-onset CRC or no cancer.
