Risk factors and prognostic impact of left ventricular assist device–associated infections
American Heart Journal Jun 09, 2019
Tattevin P, et al. - Among participants from the ASSIST-ICD study (19 centers), researchers focused on the features, risk factors, and prognosis of left ventricular assist device (LVAD)-associated infections in 652 patients. At 6.5 months post-implantation, 248 LVAD infections were diagnosed in 201 patients (30.1%). One-third of LVAD recipients developed LVAD–associated infections. No detrimental influence of infections on survival was seen. LVAD–associated infections were mostly associated with skin pathogens and gram-negative bacilli. With HeartMate II vs HeartWare and in patients who needed implantable cardioverter-defibrillator-related procedures following LVAD, an increased risk of developing infections was noted.
