Risk and predictors of heart failure in sarcoidosis in a population-based cohort study from Sweden
Heart May 28, 2021
Rossides M, Kullberg S, Grunewald J, et al. - Researchers sought to estimate overall as well as stratified HRs and explored risk factors for heart failure (HF) in sarcoidosis. From the Swedish National Patient Register, they selected sarcoidosis cases and matched those to general population comparators. The HR related to sarcoidosis was estimated to be 2.43 and did not differ based on age, gender or treatment status. The strongest independent clinical predictors of HF included diabetes, atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias. Although sarcoidosis patients had a low HF rate, it was still more than twofold increased vs the general population, especially right after diagnosis. These risks could not be explained solely by ischaemic heart disease history, whereas a seemingly strong predictor of HF in sarcoidosis was ventricular arrhythmias indicating cardiac sarcoidosis.
