Right ventricular longitudinal strain predicts survival in patients with functional tricuspid regurgitation

Canadian Journal of Cardiology Jan 17, 2021

Bannehr M, Kahn U, Liebchen J, et al. - Researchers focused on the prevalence as well as prognostic value of right ventricular (RV) dysfunction in patients with tricuspid regurgitation (TR). They examined data from 1,089 consecutive patients. To define RV dysfunction, experts used tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), fractional area change and right ventricular free wall longitudinal strain (RV strain). Two-year all-cause mortality was determined. No, mild, moderate, and severe TR was present in 13.9 %, 61.2 %, 19.6 %, and 5.3 % of patients, respectively. Increased mortality was observed in relation to TR grade. The identified independent predictors for mortality included impaired RV strain and TAPSE. Overall, echocardiographic assessment of RV function appears of interest in patients suffering from TR. Additional value for two-year mortality was conferred by RV strain evaluation.
