Rheumatic heart disease burden, trends, and inequalities in the Americas, 1990–2017: A population-based study
The Lancet Global Health Sep 23, 2019
Ordunez P, et al. -In the secondary analysis of the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, researchers explained the regional burden, trends, and inequalities of rheumatic heart disease, a preventable and eradicable condition, in the Americas. A total of 3,604,800 cases of rheumatic heart disease occurred overall in the Americas in 2017, with 2,437 deaths were estimated by GBD 2017. The Americas have greatly decreased premature mortality because of rheumatic heart disease since 1990. These health gains were matched with a substantial decrease in the magnitude of income-related inequalities across countries, which is constant with overall socioeconomic and health betterments noted in the Region. Countries with less favorable rheumatic heart disease situations should be taken into account for the strengthening of their national programmes.
