Retinal non-perfusion in proliferative diabetic retinopathy before and after panretinal photocoagulation assessed by wide field OCT angiography

American Journal of Ophthalmology Feb 04, 2020

Russell JF, Al-khersan H, Shi Y, et al. - In order to better understand changes in retinal non-perfusion before and after panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) in treatment-naïve eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), researchers conducted this prospective, observational, consecutive case series to compare wide field swept source OCT angiography (WF SS-OCTA) imaging with ultrawide-field fluorescein angiography imaging. WF SS-OCTA was performed on 20 eyes with treatment-naïve PDR from 15 patients from January 2018 through January 2019. Using WF SS-OCTA, RNP in PDR can be identified at baseline, and serially imaged after PRP. Retinal perfusion in PDR after PRP doesn't significantly change. WF SS-OCTA's ability to longitudinally assess RNP areas provides additional evidence for the use of WF SS-OCTA as the primary imaging modality for PDR clinical management.
