Respiratory health and quality of life in young exclusive, habitual smokers: A comparison of waterpipe smokers, cigarette smokers and non-smokers
International Journal of COPD Aug 15, 2019
Hawari FI, Obeidat NA, Abu Alhalawa M, et al. - Via a cross-sectional survey, researchers compared young adults who were regular waterpipe (WP) smokers (WPS) with those who were regular cigarette smokers (CS, positive controls) and non-smokers (negative controls), in terms of burden of respiratory symptoms and health-related quality of life. This study included 135 WPS, 303 CS, and 300 non-smokers. A significant burden of respiratory symptoms was observed in young habitual WPS vs their young non-smoking counterparts. This burden in young habitual WPS was comparable to that seen with CS. Despite their age, young WPS (and CS) maybe well on their way to developing respiratory disease.
