Relationship of nutritional status, inflammation, and serum albumin levels during acute illness: A prospective study
American Journal of Medicine Nov 22, 2019
Eckart A, Struja T, Kutz A, et al. - Adults in the medical emergency department of a Swiss tertiary care center were recruited in this study (n = 2,465) in order to examine the association of nutritional status and inflammation with low serum albumin levels and 30-day mortality in a large cohort. It was found that elevated parameters of inflammation and high nutritional risk were individually related to hypoalbuminemia. Mortality was independently prognosticated by all three parameters. Moreover, during the primary assessment of individuals in emergency departments, combining them aids mortality risk stratification.
