Relationship between retinal vessel diameter with both retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and optic nerve head parameters in middle-aged Caucasians: The Northern Finland Birth Cohort Eye study
Acta Ophthalmologica Jul 14, 2019
Geneid M, et al. - In a cohort of middle-aged Caucasians, researchers explored the connection between retinal vessel diameter (RVD) with retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness and optic nerve head (ONH) parameters. For this investigation, they examined 3070 people (6140 eyes). Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT) evaluated the thickness of the RNFL and ONH parameters. They analysed data from 2217 persons involving RNFL, central retinal arteriolar equivalent, central retinal venular equivalent, sex, body mass index, mean arterial pressure, diabetes status, smoking status, optic disc area, rim area, spherical refraction and intraocular pressure. Strong connections were found between larger RVD and thicker RNFL in all subjects. This research helps explain the connection between RVD, RNFL thickness and ONH parameters and offers normal values for middle-aged Caucasians that will assist investigate the role of vascular aetiology in systemic and eye diseases in future studies.
