Relationship between retinal blood flow and cytokines in central retinal vein occlusion

BMC Ophthalmology Jun 12, 2020

Noma H, Yasuda K, Mimura T, et al. - In this observational study, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between retinal blood flow and aqueous humor levels of cytokines/growth factors in patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Sixty-four eyes of 64 CRVO patients were examined before anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy. The affected eye's mean blur rate was significantly lower that of the unaffected eye. The mean blur rate showed a strong negative association with the log-transformed aqueous humor levels of plancental growth factor, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and interleukin-8, but not VEGF. Such results indicate that in patients with nonischemic CRVO and macular edema, retinal blood flow velocity might be more strongly associated with inflammatory factors than VEGF.
