Relationship between metformin use and vitamin B12 status in patients with type 2 diabetes in Japan
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Jan 30, 2020
Sugawara K, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving T2DM patients treated (Met group, n = 122) or not treated (control group, n = 63) with metformin, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between metformin use and VB12 status in these individuals. According to findings, homocysteine levels, as well as the level of VB12, hemoglobin concentration, and mean corpuscular volume, did not vary significantly between the control and metformin groups treated. Findings suggested a positive and negative association of serum homocysteine and VB12 levels with the daily dose of metformin, respectively. During metformin treatment, the risk of VB12 deficiency seems to be low in Japanese T2DM patients. High doses of metformin, however, could lead to a moderate decrease in circulating VB12 levels as well as anemia in elderly people.
