Relationship between ligament forces and contact forces in balancing at total knee surgery

Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 21, 2019

Sanz-Pena I, et al. - Researchers assessed the data to comparatively analyze the outcome and association between the collateral ligament forces and the condylar contact forces. They measured the ligament forces as well as the lateral and medial tibial contact forces during flexion for several positions of the femoral component on the femur, building a set of forces for the simulated conditions. They observed a linear relation of the combined medial and lateral ligament and contact forces with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. They noted the correlations for the medial and lateral sides separately, 0.85 and 0.88, respectively, with more than 80% of points within a ±25% deviation from the linear relations. They suggested an equal correlation of such forces to the distraction forces as well as the moments at which condylar liftoff would happen from varus-valgus moments.
