Relation of total bilirubin and QT interval prolongation (from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey)
Annals of Noninvasive Electrocardiology Sep 16, 2019
Majeed CN, et al. - In a multiracial cohort (n = 6,627; 59.0 ± 13.3 years) including 52.6% women and 49.7% Non-Hispanic Whites, researchers examined the link between total bilirubin (TB) levels and QT interval. The participants were without cardiovascular disease and took part in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A prolonged QT interval was observed in relation to elevated bilirubin levels. This indicates an association between higher TB and abnormal cardiac repolarization. A 12% rise in the prevalence of prolonged QT interval was observed in correlation with each 0.29 mg/dl increase in TB levels. This link was stronger in males vs females.
