Relation of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 with prevalent and incident atrial fibrillation in a population-based study
Heart Rhythm May 13, 2019
Busch M, et al. - In this large population-based study, researchers assessed prevalent and incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in relation to insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and its main binding protein insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) levels. They gathered data from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) on 3,160 participants. A medical examination, standardized electrocardiographic evaluation, as well as measurements of serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels were done at presentation. Those without AF at baseline (SHIP-1) who had AF during the follow up (SHIP-2; following a mean of 5.2 years) were examined for incident AF. In this study, a higher prevalence of AF was reported in relation to low IGF-1/IGFBP-3 ratios. For incident AF, a similar effect was noted.
