Relation of body mass index to outcomes in patients with heart failure implanted with left ventricular assist devices

The American Journal of Cardiology Aug 08, 2020

Galand V, Flécher E, Lelong B, et al. - This investigation was undertaken to unveil the effect of low and high BMI on results following Left-Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) surgery, and to explore the factors predictive of death in patients with abnormal BMI (low/high). By baseline BMI, 3 groups of patients were defined: low (BMI ≤ 18.5 kg/m²); normal (BMI = 18.5-24.99 kg/m²) and high (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²) (including overweight (BMI = 25-29.99 kg/m²) and obesity (BMI ≥ 30 Kg/m²)). Total bilirubin ≥ 16µmol/L before LVAD, hypertension, destination therapy and cardiac surgery with LVAD, were predictors of death for LVAD candidates with abnormal BMI. Findings revealed lower survival in LVAD recipients with abnormal BMI, especially in those who were underweight. Four predictors of death were recognized for LVAD group with abnormal BMI, distinguishing those a low, intermediate and high risks of mortality.
