Relation between metformin use and vitamin B12 status in patients with type 2 diabetes in Japan
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Dec 26, 2019
Sugawara K, et al. - Via performing this cross-sectional study of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients treated (Met group, n = 122) or not treated (control group, n = 63) with metformin, researchers sought to investigate the relation between metformin use and VB12 status in these individuals. The two groups did not differ significantly with respect to the level of homocysteine, a marker of VB12 activity, as well as the VB12 level, hemoglobin concentration, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). They observed a positive correlation of the level of homocysteine and a negative correlation of the level of VB12 with the daily dose of metformin. Elderly individuals in the Met group had significantly lower hemoglobin level than elderly individuals in the control group, although the two groups exhibited similar MCV.
