Regional differences in temporal incidence of Clostridium difficile infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis
American Journal of Infection Control Aug 07, 2019
Ho J, Wong SH, Doddangoudar VC, et al. - In view of the observed changes in the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infections in previous decades, researchers sought to assess temporal trends in the incidence of C difficile infection across geographic regions. Analysis of relevant literature revealed a global increase in the estimated incidence of C difficile infection from 1997 to 2004. Thereafter, they noted a significant downward trend until 2015. From 2005 to 2015, most European countries showed decreased incidences, except France, where an increasing incidence was observed. Over the same period, the incidences have stabilized in North America; however, in Asia, a significant increase in the incidence from 2006 to 2014 was observed. Western Asian countries, including Turkey and Israel, showed the greatest increase. These findings may assist in the allocation of resources for controlling C difficile infection and may infor future surveillance efforts in countries where epidemiologic information on C difficile infection remains sparse.
