Kume A, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the epidemiological status of diabetes mellitus (DM)-related complications in Japan. The participants were 3.11 million Japanese people who were enrolled in the Japanese claim database between 2005 and 2014. The study sample consisted of 66,923 patients with DM. The prevalence of DM patients was 3.8% in 2005 and 4.2% in 2014. Diabetic retinopathy, followed by diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy was the most frequent complication. The frequencies of ocular and neural complications decreased significantly, while those of renal complications increased significantly during the study period. The most common DM-related major complications in Japan were ocular complications. Notably, diabetic macular edema has risen significantly in recent years.
