Readmission following urgent transcatheter aortic valve implantation vs urgent balloon aortic valvuloplasty in patients with decompensated heart failure or cardiogenic shock
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Apr 09, 2021
Chakraborty S, Patel N, Bandyopadhyay D, et al. - Given that a feasible choice for aortic stenosis (AS) patients with decompensated heart failure (HF) and cardiogenic shock (CS) is urgent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) vs urgent balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV), researchers compared risk as well as cause of readmission in these two high‐risk groups, by performing this retrospective study utilizing Nationwide Readmission Database 2011–2014. A weighted population comprising 6,670 patients with urgent BAV and 6,964 with urgent TAVI was identified. Among patients with AS and decompensated HF or CS, a seeming usefulness of urgent TAVI was revealed driven by roughly 10 and 25% decreases in overall readmissions at 30 as well as 90 days, and marked decreases in reintervention, although offset partially by higher risk of readmission attributable to gastrointestinal bleeding at 30 days.
