Race and income moderate the association between depressive symptoms and obesity
Preventive Medicine Dec 08, 2018
Bell CN, et al. - Given that race and sex influence the relationship between obesity and depression, researchers sought how race and income interact with obesity on depression. They combined data from the 2007–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to measure depressive symptoms with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and assess obesity as body mass index ≥30 kg/m2. The association between obesity and depression moderated
in correlation with race and income. Obesity is positively associated with depressive symptoms across income levels among white women, while African American women at any income level displayed no association between obesity and depression. Among high-income African American men and middle-income white men, obesity is only associated with depressive symptoms.
