Quantitative analysis of radial peripapillary capillary plexuses in patients with clinically unilateral pseudoexfoliation syndrome

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology May 26, 2020

Goker YS, et al. - In this cross-sectional comparative prospective study involving 88 patients (128 eyes), researchers sought to image the radial peripapillary capillary vessel densities (RPCvds) of the affected eyes and fellow unaffected eyes of people with unilateral pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES) using optical coherence tomography angiography and to compare the RPCvds with those of normal age-matched people. In the study eyes, the RPCvds and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses in the peripapillary region were significantly lower than in the fellow eyes and the control eyes. No significant differences were found between the fellow eyes and the control eyes with regard to the RPCvd and RNFL values in any region. Lower RPCvds may cause capillary deficiency and impairment of optic nerve head perfusion inPES patients.
