Quality of life and posttraumatic stress symptoms in paediatric patients with tibial fractures during treatment with cast or Ilizarov frame
Injury Oct 31, 2019
Johnson L, et al. - In this prospective, longitudinal cohort study, researchers compared the quality of life in children and adolescents with tibial fracture during treatment with either a definitive long-leg cast or Ilizarov frame. At first follow-up, patients between 5 and 17 years of age with tibial fractures definitely treated with a long-leg cast or Ilizarov frame are recruited. The final analysis included 25 patients from each group. Based on the AO/OTA classification and the number of open fractures, injuries were more severe in the frame patients. No statistically significant variations were observed at either point of time in any of the outcome scores between treatment groups. There was a significant improvement in the physical and total domains reported by the child in both treatment groups based on application time. No differences were found in the child reported psychosocial domain scores at any time point or between treatment groups. Parent reported scores exhibited only a significant physical improvement in the frame group. Using a cast or an Ilizarov frame, no difference was found in health-related quality of life during treatment between the patients treated for tibial fractures.
