Psychiatric illness is common in elderly fracture patients

Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Feb 22, 2019

Gitajn IL, et al. - Researchers analyzed 1,186 individuals to estimate the prevalence of psychiatric disturbance in fracture cases and also to examine the relationship between psychiatric illness and difficulties demanding unplanned readmission in elderly cases. They noticed that 44% of subjects age ≥70 years had psychiatric comorbidities, and among them, 34% had >1 diagnosis. A higher rate of readmission among candidates with a psychiatric diagnosis was found vs those without psychiatric diagnosis (35% vs 21%). They noted an independent association between psychiatric illness and unplanned readmission upon multivariate analysis after controlling for multiple factors.
