Prospective study of hemoglobin A1c and incident carotid artery plaque in Chinese adults without diabetes
Cardiovascular Diabetology Nov 23, 2019
Xu R, et al. - Given the association of diabetes with carotid artery plaque (CAP), researchers examined if correlation exists between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level, a marker for long-term glycemic status, and altered CAP risk in individuals with fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations below the current cutoff for diabetes. They annually assessed both HbA1c level and CAP (assessed via ultrasound B-mode imaging) during 2014–2018 in 16,863 Chinese adults (aged 18 years or more; 9,855 men and 7,008 women) with fasting blood glucose < 7.0 mmol/L at baseline (2013). They reported 3,942 incident CAP cases during 5 years of follow up. A higher future risk of CAP was observed for individuals with higher baseline HbA1c. In the full-adjusted model, a 56% higher risk of CAP was observed in correlation to each percent increase of HbA1c.
