Prophylactic postoperative measures to minimize surgical site infections in spine surgery: Systematic review and evidence summary
The Spine Journal Oct 01, 2019
Tan T, Lee H, Huang MS, et al. - Via a systematic review, meta-analysis, evidence synthesis of 41 studies (9 RCT, 32 cohort studies), experts systematically assessed the literature and gave evidence-based summaries on postoperative measures for surgical site infections (SSI) prophylaxis in spine surgery. Six postoperative care domains with correlation key questions were recognized. Irrespective of the postoperative period being key in SSI prophylaxis, the literature was inadequate and with no agreement on optimum postoperative care for SSI prevention in spine surgery. The prevailing best evidence was exhibited with its shortcomings. Therefore, high-quality studies discussing high-risk cohorts like the old age, obese and diabetic populations, and for traumatic and oncological indications are essentially needed.
