Projecting ESRD incidence and prevalence in the United States through 2030
Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Dec 21, 2018
McCullough KP, et al. - Researchers quantified the incidence and prevalence of ESRD in the United States through 2030, by using an open compartmental simulation model, with wide-ranging projections of population obesity and ESRD death rates being the basis. Based on the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the US Census, population trends in age, race, hypertension, and diabetes were analyzed. They expect an increase in the burden of ESRD in the United States population through 2030, this was attributed to demographic, clinical, and lifestyle shifts in the population and improvements in RRT. They also expect that, substantial continued growth in the population of patients with ESRD could be ensured by planning for ESRD resource allocation. Preventing the progression of CKD to kidney failure should be the goal of future interventions.
