Proinflammatory diet increases circulating inflammatory biomarkers and falls risk in community-dwelling older men

The Journal of Nutrition Nov 01, 2019

Cervo MMC, Scott D, Seibel MJ, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, the goal was to assess inflammatory biomarkers, musculoskeletal health, and falls risk in correlation with the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) in community-dwelling older men with mean age 81.1 ± 4.5 y, who took part in the 5-y follow-up of the Concord Health and Aging in Men Project. Using a validated diet history questionnaire, the calculation of energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) was done. By means of DXA, the measurement of bone mineral density was taken. An analysis of 24 inflammatory biomarkers was performed. Via telephone interviews every 4 mo, information was gathered regarding incident falls over 3 y. In community-dwelling older men, increased levels of IL-6, IL-7, and TNF-α; increased falls risk; and lower appendicular lean mass adjusted for BMI were observed in relation to the intake of a proinflammatory diet. Levels of IL-7 partly mediated the link between incident falls and E-DII.
