Progression of retinopathy and incidence of cardiovascular disease: Findings from the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Study
British Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 12, 2020
Grunwald JE, Pistilli M, Ying GS, et al. - Among people who took part in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Study, researchers examined the link between advancement of retinopathy and concurrent incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events among patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). This analysis included 1,051 participants with fundus photographs collected at two timepoints separated by 3.5 years, on average. This study did not include participants with a self-reported history of CVD. Findings revealed a higher incidence of CVD events in relation to progression of retinopathy, and experts inferred that macrovascular disease may be suggested by retinal-vascular pathology even following adjustment for kidney diseases and CVD risk factors. When evaluating CVD in patients with CKD, crucial information may be gained by assessing retinal morphology.
