Prognostic value of elevated lipoprotein(a) in patients with acute coronary syndromes
European Journal of Clinical Investigation Apr 17, 2019
Gencer B, et al. - In this investigation involving patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), researchers studied the prognostic value of lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]). At the time of angiography, Lp(a) plasma levels were collected from 1711 patients hospitalized for ACS in a prospective Swiss multicenter cohort. According to results, levels of Lp(a) range from 2.5 mg/dL to 132 mg/dL, with a mean of 6 mg/dL and a mean of 14.2 mg/dL. High levels of Lp(a) at the time of angiography do not predict cardiovascular outcomes in otherwise well-controlled patients, noted the investigators. However, elevated Lp(a) levels may have clinical utility in detecting patients who would not be on targets for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol 1 year after ACS.
