Prognostic utility of right ventricular remodeling over conventional risk stratification in patients with COVID-19
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Oct 22, 2020
Kim J, Volodarskiy A, Sultana R, et al. - Given the reported correlation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with augmented risk for right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and dilation, researchers here examined if adverse RV remodeling (dysfunction/dilation) is predictive of COVID-19 prognosis independent of clinical and biomarker risk stratification. They studied a total of 510 consecutive COVID-19 inpatients (age 64 ± 14 years, 66% men) undergoing clinical transthoracic echocardiography at 3 New York City hospitals. Among these patients, 35% and 15% presented with RV dilation and dysfunction, respectively. Findings suggest that in COVID-19, adverse RV remodeling is predictive of mortality; this was noted independent of standard clinical and biomarker-based assessment.
