Prognostic relevance of short-term blood pressure variability: The Spanish ABPM Registry
Hypertension Jan 31, 2020
de la Sierra A, Banegas JR, Bursztyn M, et al. - Using the Spanish ABPM Registry, researchers examined a large cohort of patients with hypertension in order to assess the link of short-term blood pressure (BP) variability, evaluated via ambulatory BP monitoring, with total and cardiovascular mortality among these individuals. Overall 63,910 cases with a median follow-up of 4.7 years were analyzed. Higher values of BP variability were noted in patients who died during follow-up vs those remaining alive. A significant link with total and cardiovascular mortality was demonstrated by daytime, nighttime, and weighted SD, systolic and diastolic, as well as diastolic average real variability in fully adjusted models. There was an independent link of a nighttime systolic SD ≥ 12 mm Hg with total and cardiovascular mortality. Experts concluded an independent link of short-term BP variability with total and cardiovascular death in patients with hypertension.
