Prognostic implications of influenza virus infection in a cardiac intensive care unit: Potential impact of a screening program
Cardiology Oct 10, 2019
Muñoz P, Vicent L, Bouza E, et al. - Researchers undertook a prospective registry during the flu season in an intensive cardiac care unit, to determine the presentation as well as prognosis of influenza in a cardiac intensive care unit, and to find out the influence of an active surveillance program in the diagnosis. No systematic screening was carried out in the first phase. A second phase involved performing systematic influenza A and B detection for all patients admitted. They noted that mortality was independently predicted by influenza infection. Among patients admitted to an intensive cardiac care unit during the flu season, nearly 8% were influenced by influenza, and a high mortality rate was observed. An improved early detection was allowed by an active surveillance program.
