Prognostic impact of left atrial function following transcatheter mitral valve repair
Journal of the American Heart Association May 08, 2019
Ledwoch J, et al. - In this study including 88 consecutive patients, researchers evaluated possible alterations in left atrial (LA) ejection fraction (LAEF) as well as its prognostic significance in patients after transcatheter mitral valve repair using the MitraClip. Participants had complete echocardiography at baseline and were observed between 3 and 6 months after the procedure. In 58% of the population, improvement in LAEF was noted. A decline in LAEF was demonstrated by patients with residual mitral regurgitation ≥grade 2 and with residual transmitral gradient ≥5 mm Hg, as compared to their counterparts. In patients undergoing MitraClip implantation, there was a link between changes in LA function and important measures such as residual mitral regurgitation, elevated transmitral gradient, and left ventricular function. Importantly, all-cause mortality was strongly predicted by changes in LA function.
