Prognostic factors of patients with extremity myxoid liposarcomas after surgery

Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Apr 03, 2019

Wu J, et al. - From the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database of the US National Cancer Institute, researchers studied 1756 cases to determine the distinctive clinical characteristics of extremity myxoid liposarcoma (MLS) by evaluating the prognostic factors. They noted that 10.5% of tumors were located in the upper limbs whereas 89.5% in lower extremities. They recorded the incidence of local surgery in all the candidates and radiation therapy in 57.2% of cases. They noticed the 5- and 10-year overall survival (OS) rates of the entire cohort, 86.4%, and 75.9%, respectively with 90.5% and 85.2% of 5- and 10-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates, respectively. They recorded a significant association of year of the diagnosis ≥ year 2000 with an increased CSS. They suggested age, gender, tumor grade, year of diagnosis, and tumor size as independent prognostic factors for OS and CSS in subjects with extremity MLS.
