Prognostic factors of adjuvant chemotherapy discontinuation among stage III colon cancer patients: A survey of medical oncologists and a systematic review and meta-analysis

Cancer Medicine Jan 29, 2020

Boyne DJ, O'Sullivan DE, Heer EV, et al. - Researchers interrogated medical oncologists and performed a systematic review and meta-analysis, to define the prognostic factors of early discontinuation of adjuvant chemotherapy among stage III colon cancer patients. Medical oncologists (n = 25) who treat colon cancer within Alberta, Canada, were sent a survey in March 2019. They were being asked to rank the prognostic significance of a set of variables using a Likert scale. To quantify the agreement, a weighted Cohen's kappa was used. Overall 14 clinicians responded. A review of 18 investigations was performed. The data obtained from both the survey and the systematic review revealed four variables that were found prognostic of early discontinuation, including comorbidity, performance status, T stage, and chemotherapy regimen. Besides, some suggestion for the prognostic value of age, marital status/social support, muscle mass, N stage, and tumor grade was also reported. Current evidence was found to be heterogeneous and limited, so, further investigation is required to corroborate these observations.
