Prognosis and NT-proBNP in heart failure patients with preserved vs reduced ejection fraction

Heart Apr 12, 2019

Salah K, et al. - Researchers compared patients hospitalized for acute decompensated heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) to those with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) with respect to the prognostic value of absolute and percentage change in N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels. A total of 283 patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% were classified as HFpEF, while 776 with <40% left ventricular ejection fraction were classified as HFrEF. In HFpEF as well as in HFrEF, the same relative risk information was conferred by NT-proBNP levels. According to findings, comorbidities may contribute comparatively more to prognosis in patients with HFpEF with lower NT-proBNP levels vs patients with HFrEF.
